Attracting Birds To Your Lawn + Garden

  • How-To

For some, there is nothing more enjoyable than bird watching in your own lawn and garden. Follow these tips from Woerner and you will be attracting beautiful birds to your lawn or garden in no time. Select bird-friendly plants: Choose a variety of plants that provide food and shelter for birds. Opt for native species that are well-suited to your local climate and ecosystem. Include a mix of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses to create a diverse habitat.

provide water:

Birds need a reliable source of water for drinking and bathing. Consider installing a birdbath, a shallow container with fresh water that is refilled regularly. Adding a water feature like a small pond or a recirculating fountain can also attract birds.

offer food sources:

Incorporate plants that produce berries, seeds, or nectar to attract birds. Examples include sunflowers, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, serviceberry, and holly bushes. Provide a variety of plants that bloom at different times throughout the year to ensure a continuous food supply.

create bird-friendly habitats:

Birds need places to perch, hide, and nest. Planting trees and shrubs of varying heights and densities can create natural cover and nesting spots. Leave some areas of your lawn or garden undisturbed, with leaf litter or fallen branches, to provide additional habitat for insects and worms that birds feed on.

avoid pesticides:

Minimize or eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides in your lawn and garden, as these chemicals can harm birds and their food sources. Instead, embrace natural pest control methods such as companion planting and biological controls like ladybugs or beneficial insects.

provide birdhouses and nesting materials:

Install birdhouses or nest boxes in your yard, appropriately sized for the species you want to attract. Different bird species have specific requirements for the size and shape of nesting cavities. Additionally, you can leave out materials like twigs, grass clippings, or small branches that birds can use to build their nests.

consider supplemental feeders:

Bird feeders can supplement the natural food sources in your lawn and garden. Use different types of feeders to attract a variety of bird species. Common options include tube feeders, platform feeders, and suet feeders. Make sure to regularly clean the feeders and provide fresh food to prevent the spread of disease.

create a bird-friendly ENVIRONMENT:

Make your lawn and garden welcoming to birds by avoiding excessive noise and disturbances. Minimize the presence of outdoor cats and reduce window collisions by placing decals or markings on windows that birds might otherwise fly into.

With these steps and a little luck, you can create a diverse and attractive habitat for birds in your lawn and garden. Enjoy observing the different species that visit and benefit from your efforts! And visit Woerner to get everything to make your lawn and garden the ultimate bird sanctuary!
